Platform Pilot
Mental Health In War: Ukraine
OPORA Mental Health is a pilot project designed to provide clinical researchers and innovators with safe, secure, and cost-efficient access to patient data in Ukraine. We are collaborating with clinical partners to co-create a data collection and analytics pipeline, leveraging the OPORA Health Ethical Data infrastructure.
The problem
Anxiety, depression, and PTSD are the most common mental health challenges among war-affected populations. Viktor Liashko, the Minister of Health of Ukraine, estimates that 14 million Ukrainians require psychological aid. However, the capacity to provide this help is limited and cannot meet the high demand. This highlights the need to apply innovative technologies to develop the most efficient, simple, affordable, data-driven, and personalized tools for mental health recovery programs.
This is not only a challenge for Ukraine—statistics show that 1 in every 8 people globally lives with a mental disorder. Over 264 million people worldwide suffer from depression (World Health Organization, 2020), making it the leading cause of disability (World Health Organization, 2020).
The main obstacle to assessing the effectiveness of alternative emerging therapies and treatment plans is the availability of high-quality patient data, which could help clinicians and researchers develop new strategies for scaling support.
To achieve this, clinical experts and researchers need high-quality patient data to gain new insights and identify appropriate personalised solutions.
